OUR MISSION
We believe that each person with developmental disabilities is entitled to the rights and dignity afforded to all persons. As an organization, our mission is to:
- Recognize individual needs and goals, while providing services and support in an enriched environment which fosters independence. This environment of teaching and growth focuses on quality of life, decision making, development of friendships, interests and activities, and the modeling of behaviors which promote community inclusion.
- Advocate for those we serve. Acknowledge the role of family, friends and community supports and coordinate services between providers.
- Provide residential services in a safe, comfortable and family-like atmosphere.
- Increase awareness and involve the community in the lives of those with special challenges.

OUR HISTORY
Independence was established through the efforts of the Council for the Retarded of Portage County to develop and operate residential facilities for the county's citizens with mental retardation. In January of 1975, Independence incorporated as a not-for-profit entity.
Presently, Independence is comprised of many individuals committed to improving the quality of life for our clientele. This includes our staff, volunteers, the Board of Directors, family, friends and professionals under contract with the Agency. The unique talents and personal contributions of each of these individual's has made Independence what it is today and will continue to shape the future of our Agency.
